Saboba, the Capital of the Saboba-Cheriponi district of the Northern Region, is a rural sub-Sahelian village, on the Togo border. The area of 3439 km2, has a population approaching
120,000. The climate is hot and dry, with the rainy season occurring
between June and October. Due to poor soil and lack of water, farming is difficult. Subsistence farming
and rural poverty is the norm for the majority of the population. In
this savannah region, flat and hot grasslands are the norm. Daytime
temperatures may reach 45 °C (113° F) with regularity. Average monthly
temperatures range from 25 to 35 °C ( 77°- 95° F). |

Saboba Medical Centre, the regional district hospital, is
a program of AGREDS. a Church based NGO. (www.agreds.org). Patients are served regardless of race, creed, color, sex, religion, age or national origin.

The 60 bed hospital has
a Women’s Ward, a Men Ward, shared with the children, and an Operating
Theatre where major and minor operations are performed. Patients are
admitted to the wards 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hospital
is staffed with 1 MD, 2 Medical Assistants, 1 Administrator,
RN’s, Ward and Theatre assistants. Budget limits have prevented regular
maintanence and repair. All buildings need cleaning, repair and paint.

Primary Care Clinic, supervised by Joshua Beso, R.N. provides maternal and child health services. Pregnant women and children under 5, are given immunizations and health education to reduce the incidence of malaria, malnutrition, guinea worm, and typhoid. Public Health programs are provided to the community and local villages. Two heavy duty motorcycles are requested to travel to the remote villages.

The Outpatient Clinic, houses the pharmacy, the laboratory, Medical Records, Stores, and the Administration. This department, supervised by Mr. Lordd Conrad, a Principal Medical Assistant, treats 100 or more patients a day.
In the small lab, patients are tested for diabetes, anemia, typhoid, malaria, and malnutrition. Xray, sonogram or EKG are not available. A request has been made to replace the aging equipment. See the wish list.
